I dont usually say such stuff like this but. I just really couldnt stop thinking about it and I really gotta put this off of my chest.

Even if i said it a few times outside of DA Such as Discord and such.

Whats this even about?

Basically this: Using a Pre Existing sprite vs Using a 3D Model for sprites and using it for "Modern Standards" of some thing.

Hence the 2D vs 2.5D title

I am gonna reiterate. I have barely bothered to play the recent versions of SSF2 (Smash Flash) and SSBC (Smash Bros Crusade).

Mostly cause of how. Most character resprites dont have a certain charm of some sorts. Despite the positivity some and/or most have reacted to.

Or the fact SSF2's final smashes are just 1:1 to the official smash bros final smashes.

Mainly cause back in the older days. They used to use to edit of pre-existing sprites back then while recoloring most of them to have a SSBB-Esque feel to em. Or whatever style they try to replicate.

Especially how some sprites may clash well in most cases and at the same time Not.

Why rant on just those more stylized and modernized sprites?

Now. I know most will complain about "But they're overused! / Its so overdone! / They had to do a resprite so no C&D or DMCA by whatever company." or maybe "It's just their decision"

Yes I understand that. But when you ever pay attention to how most spriters and editors edit the vanilla ripped sprites from a lets say SMW and/or Sonic Advance and/or Battle

A lot of the edits by many spriters added some charm and variety to them. Combining with prerendered 3D models such as lets say. BrawlBox/Crate

and frankenspriting from there. It does add more variety and keeps the charm of the original. IF done right.

As such. The thing with most of the Pre-Existing sprites is that. Because certain whatever sprite whoever edits them has some expression (depending how its edited and how easy it is to do so while making an edit out of). It retroactively makes makes either recoloring a specific art style + just keeping the original and will still look good and have that specific charm.

When comparing to how they just simply used a 3D but make it perfectly animated with some pixel art skills. It does look good most of the time

but at the same time. It doesn't retain the charm comparing to using an existing sprite.

For instance. Both SSBC and SSF2's Sonic sprites. They look great. But they lost the charm of Advance and Battle entirely.

(Jason Griffith IS STILL overused as Sonic. Fight me all you want!)

Even if you do resprite of em off battle or advance it still doesnt feel right.

And/Or how about: The New ness sprites in SSF2 is miles better than the Fusuuke edit / Old Ness sprite in SSF2.

While I know theres some exceptions to this such as

The old Toad sprite in Smash Bros Crusade is WAY uglier than the New one. As the Spriter behind it did make it brighter and less on the Heavily shading part. (But at the same time IMO i'm still mixed on it)

The New yoshi, Fox and Falco resprite in Crusade is also better than the old ones (Though afaik those were also custom made but also had a specific charm in them (though yoshi had a rough sprite in a few builds)

or the fact that

I like the OLD Weegee sprites than the new ones.

I am already aware The SSBC's new moveset and sprites for Weegee is WAY more flexible than the old stiff one. Cause of simply the Meme-y Nature of Weegee: "Character than just appearance"

Just keep in mind I am not the kind of spriter to achieve such ambitious things like that.

All in all. Im not getting anything from those 3D model looking sprites that look like they were traced. and yes. Even when recoloring the "2.5D sprites" they can try to use specific palettes to kind of replicate whatever it is. But at the same time. It still carries over the "It doesn't have the specific charm in it".

In other cases.

Sure you might someday see me make more sprites of that Neo Geo Pocket-Esque Sonic (for instance).

But it has some charm that is still retained from its orignal base (Which I have built off of from: Sonic Pocket Adventure). Just stylized like those Pocket SSB Mario Bros

and about the C&D and DMCA. Pay attention that no one who developed SSF2 has ever gotten any legal trouble with any company

The same would go for SSBC.

Keep in mind not every company can go after every fangame.

TLDR for this part ANYONE with A BRAIN. KNOWS A Fan game is made for passion and fun.

Using whatever sprites is mostly fine.

Why would you rant on them in the first place anyways? / It's just a 2D Sprite/Graphic. What are you getting so worked up about?/ It's just a fan game with passion. (And/or Any other similar question)

You can criticize a fan game as much as any other official media and any other Unofficial Media. Ever.

I am criticizing the 2.5D sprites because. I think its mostly just a rather unecessary change in most people's cases when it comes to retaining a specific style of some sorts than just "Cheating a way to make more 2D sprites". and Also something I have been used to in YEARS.

With your logic (Depending on your view). I get it. you like em remixed and modernized by using it as a defense. Is it because it look unique? it doesnt always mean its good you know.

Ending this

Look. At the end of the day. its NOT the kind of worse thing ever. I am not against Respriting characters to look 2.5D Just as long as it respects the original sprite it used to be and doesn't feel like a total "Downgrade".

Just making everything 2.5D sprites (Without respecting the original sprite it used to be) for, whatever it is. Just never works well for me.

Keep in mind. This Journal is not meant to harrass anyone but to call out someone and spread awareness to anyone else. Also its still far from being finalized.

For those who are like

playing MUGEN or make MUGEN content on your own or whatever it is.

Making sprites of some oc you made or others.

Miku Miku Dance content. Or have some Superb Talent.

Avoid these "spammers" It's best to Report them for Block evading.

Some of the "art" they made arent made by themselves at all (furthermore and later on in this journal it will be deplorable later) some of them are stolen from others despite they credit them.

It's not just DA hes in.

On Discord its about the same as on DA.

Same. Whatever nonsense they post, despite crediting other people's work. Its still mostly stealing, same "Creativity", some times they post incorrect answers (Trust me they dont know) .etc

Conclusion.

All They do is post barely anything worthy to look at. The majority of their "Content" is nothing special.

Once again Just report them for block evading if you block em first and make sure you have the exact time and date.

On discord. If you see them posting whatever low quality crap they make. BAN EM! Even if you try replying to them "Are you an alt?" and if they dont respond sooner or later JUST Do it!

• Change the design. but not the color palette unless you add more stuff for your likings

• Giving them a name or a new name (If they dont have a name)

What you cannot do

• Reselling the character you just bought

• Reselling the character for a Higher Price.

• As well as Refunds. You've just bought the adoptable.

Make sure you reference this journal whenever an Adoptable Is Open.

Doesn't always mean. you have have to ask for permission. Some deviations do not mention permission but Can mention Credit.

Credit is easily due unless some on the picture or description says "No Credit needed"

I'm not the best person and ranter when it comes to this.

1. Make some crappy ms paint logo (or a poorly edited of an existing one)

2. MS Paint like Backgrounds.

3. Steal sprites and/or a spritesheet from whatever source and call it [Insert crappy crossover name + GT/Kai/Z Here] + also makes "Art" out of em

4. The sorta (maybe definetly) overused Mario + Sonic part.

5. Using characters that dont fit. Unless done right or better somehow (Its gonna take maybe a couple of drafts). But lets say. shoehorning your totally favorite non game and non anime character(s) in may look WAY out of place.

6. Cliche'd copy and pasted plots n' story from the original Super Mario Bros Z but change it around.

7. Copying other's animations.

8. Transforming that take too long.

9. Making the whatever scene Lacking options for whoever is dodging or something.

10. clashing inconsistent voice clips (I may sound picky but. Sonic and a couple other characters that had different voice actors is a perfect example of clashing voice clips. Goku's (Sean Schemmel) Performance just doesnt work well for Sonic)

11. Using just MS Paint (Challenge but. a few i have found did try to push around some limits.) + Bad editing software.
